Why did you decide to install phone booths in the Siemens offices?
We were in old offices that no longer met our needs. We rebuilt the partitions, changed the flooring, redesigned the work areas and meeting rooms, and created open spaces.
At first, we considered building small booths with partitions so people could isolate themselves, make calls or step away from the open space for more privacy. But the idea of installing phone booths quickly became the obvious choice.
Our constraints were simple: keep things basic, stay within budget, find the right location and optimise the space we had. We planned to install two acoustic pods, and that’s what we did.
How did employees react to the pods?
It was new for us. Some people even rejected the idea at first. One colleague said: “I don’t want that.” We used a 1-to-5 rating system. The pods received a score of 4.6/5, which is excellent. Some comments even said “Not enough phone booths”, which shows that people want more of them.
What are the strengths of the Work With Island pods?
They are well equipped: lighting, power outlets… everything is built in. They feel like mini meeting rooms. It’s great.
In the past, in open spaces, there were no dedicated areas. People made calls at their desks and left the open space only when they needed privacy. Now, people simply go into the pod. And when someone is speaking inside, you can’t hear them from the outside. The acoustic result is excellent. The promise of confidentiality is kept, and we now have calm across the floor.

How are the Work With Island pods used day to day?
They are used every single day. For example, right now, one colleague is doing an e-learning session in the first pod, and another is on a call in the second. They work very well.
If I know I have a task that will take forty-five minutes or an hour, and the pod is free, I go in, sit down, work, and no one interrupts me.

Who would you recommend the pods to?
I think this type of space is essential in modern offices. It fits perfectly with open space working. It’s a great solution for anyone who needs to make calls without disturbing others.
