ISO 23351-1: the reference standard for acoustic pods.

Working in a quiet space changes everything.

That is why all our pods are tested according to ISO 23351-1, the global reference standard for measuring the acoustic performance of office pods.

A guarantee that the quiet you buy is the quiet you experience every day.

Key takeaways

ISO 23351-1 Standard
The international reference for measuring the acoustic performance of pods. One identical protocol for all manufacturers, comparable and verifiable results.
Tested in an independent laboratory
Every Work With Island pod is tested at the CSTB, an accredited body recognised across Europe. No self-certification: real measurements, conducted without any involvement from the manufacturer.
Class A and B across the full range
The Island Solo and Island Desk achieve Class A, with noise reductions of 30.2 dB and 31.1 dB. The Island Duo and Island Quattro are certified Class B, with reductions between 28.7 dB and 29.8 dB.
Without certification, nothing is verifiable
Without ISO 23351-1, the performance figures announced by a manufacturer have no common basis for comparison. Certification is the guarantee that the numbers reflect a measured reality.

ISO 23351-1 standard : definition, measurement method, and how to read the results.

01

What is the ISO 23351-1 standard?

Published in 2020, ISO 23351-1 is a technical document that defines the reference protocol for measuring the acoustic performance of acoustic pods. The standard is recognised internationally and allows products on the market to be compared on an identical basis.

02

How does the test work?

Each pod is tested in an accredited laboratory. A calibrated sound signal is emitted outside the pod. Microphones placed inside measure the residual noise level. The difference between the two values gives the acoustic reduction index, expressed in decibels (dB).

03

How do you read the result?

After the test, pods are rated from A+ to E under the standard. The higher the rating, the more effective the insulation. A Class B pod reduces sound sufficiently to allow a private conversation without disturbing the surrounding environment.

Work With Island pods: certified under ISO 23351-1.

Every Work With Island pod is tested in an accredited laboratory, following the exact protocol defined by the standard. No self-certification, no estimates. Real measurements, conducted by an independent body.

Design considered in detail

Our pods are the result of continuous research and development work: materials, assembly, ventilation, insulation. This ongoing work is what allows us to continually refine our pods' performance and submit them to independent certification.

An independent and reliable test

Work With Island pods are tested at the CSTB, the French Scientific and Technical Centre for Building, an accredited laboratory recognised across Europe. The protocol is identical for all manufacturers, which guarantees comparable and reliable results.

Official certification

After the test, each pod is rated according to its insulation level, expressed in decibels, and receives an official certification number. The Island Solo and Island Desk achieve Class A. The Island Duo and Island Quattro achieve Class B.

Why choose a pod certified under ISO 23351-1?

ISO 23351-1 is not mandatory. But it makes a real difference when choosing an acoustic pod. Without certification, the performance figures announced by a manufacturer have no verifiable basis. With ISO 23351-1 certification, results are measured in an accredited laboratory, using the same protocol for everyone. What you buy corresponds to what has been measured.

Mesure

Tests are carried out by an accredited body, without any involvement from the manufacturer. Results are objective and verifiable.

Comparaison

All certified pods are tested using the same protocol. Products on the market are compared on identical criteria.

Performance

The figures reflect real measurements, not estimates. You know exactly what you are buying.

Investment

A certified pod is the guarantee that your budget is invested in real, measured, and documented acoustic performance.

At Work With Island, we look for the right balance between calm, comfort, and common sense.
Because the best pod is not the one that blocks out every sound, but the one that fits naturally into your office.

What good acoustics changes for your teams

Noise is one of the main obstacles to concentration at work. Yet it is often underestimated when designing office spaces.

Managing the sound environment of an office has a direct impact on work quality, team comfort, and the confidentiality of conversations.

Here is what it changes in practice :

  • Concentration and productivity
Noise is one of the primary causes of lost concentration at work. A controlled sound environment helps people reach a state of deep focus faster, stay concentrated for longer, and reduce errors caused by interruptions. In an open-plan office, a few decibels less makes a real difference.
  • Well-being at work
Prolonged exposure to noise generates stress, mental fatigue, and a drop in the quality of exchanges. A quieter environment, even partially, improves attention, reduces cognitive load, and contributes to better day-to-day comfort.
  • Guaranteed confidentiality
In an open-plan office, confidentiality is often the first unmet need. An HR conversation, a sensitive discussion, a team video call: an acoustic pod allows people to speak freely, without holding back and without disturbing those around them.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 23351-1

What are the technical criteria of this standard?

The standard evaluates pod performance based on several criteria measured in a laboratory. The two main ones are:

  • The sound pressure level, which measures the amount of noise inside and outside the pod. It indicates how effectively the pod limits sound transmission.
  • The sound attenuation index, which shows the pod's ability to reduce external noise and create a quiet interior environment.

Is the ISO 23351-1 standard mandatory?

No, it is not mandatory. However, it has become the international reference for evaluating acoustic pods. It ensures that the performance figures announced by each manufacturer are based on the same test protocol, which guarantees transparency and reliability. Make sure your supplier holds this certification and that the test was carried out under the correct conditions.

What is the difference between 25 dB and 30 dB of reduction?

The decibel scale is logarithmic, which means that every 3 dB increase in absorption doubles the performance. A pod with 30 dB reduction is therefore twice as effective as one with 27 dB.

What is the acoustic insulation of your pods?

The Island Solo and Island Desk now achieve Class A, with noise reductions of 30.2 dB and 31.1 dB.

The Island Duo and Island Quattro are Class B, with noise reductions of 28.7 dB to 29.8 dB.
