Published in 2020, ISO 23351-1 is a technical document that defines the reference protocol for measuring the acoustic performance of acoustic pods. The standard is recognised internationally and allows products on the market to be compared on an identical basis.
Each pod is tested in an accredited laboratory. A calibrated sound signal is emitted outside the pod. Microphones placed inside measure the residual noise level. The difference between the two values gives the acoustic reduction index, expressed in decibels (dB).
After the test, pods are rated from A+ to E under the standard. The higher the rating, the more effective the insulation. A Class B pod reduces sound sufficiently to allow a private conversation without disturbing the surrounding environment.

After the test, each pod is rated according to its insulation level, expressed in decibels, and receives an official certification number. The Island Solo and Island Desk achieve Class A. The Island Duo and Island Quattro achieve Class B.

It ensures that the performance figures announced by each manufacturer are based on the same test protocol, which guarantees transparency and reliability. Make sure your supplier holds this certification and that the test was carried out under the correct conditions.
The decibel scale is logarithmic, which means that every 3 dB increase in absorption doubles the performance. A pod with 30 dB reduction is therefore twice as effective as one with 27 dB.
The Island Solo and Island Desk now achieve Class A, with noise reductions of 30.2 dB and 31.1 dB.
