Pods: Acoustic standards and soundproofing

Working in peace makes all the difference. That is why all our pods are tested according to ISO 23351-1, the global standard for measuring the acoustic performance of office pods.
It is your guarantee that the product you are buying corresponds to your expectations.

Summary

ISO 23351-1 Standard
The global reference for measuring the acoustic effectiveness of booths and comparing products on a reliable basis.
Measured Performance
Our booths offer a noise reduction of up to 31.1 dB - the equivalent of going from a noisy open-plan office to a quiet space.
Comfort/Acoustic Balance
Classified A for individual pods and B for 2 and 4-person models, our pods combine effective isolation, smooth ventilation, and compact design.

Understanding the ISO 23351-1 standard

Noise is one of the main barriers to concentration at work.

To objectively compare sound isolation solutions, a common method was needed: that is the purpose of ISO 23351-1, reference in the market since 2020. ISO 23351-1 is a technical document that defines the criteria for evaluating the soundproofing performance of acoustic pods.

It takes into account several factors to ensure optimal noise reduction.

The standard uses a unified protocol to measure how much sound escapes and enters the pod, resulting in an overall sound attenuation index.

Thanks to this standardisation, products can now be compared on a fair and reliable basis.

How is performance measured?

The norm classifies acoustic pods from A+ to E, based on their ability to reduce speech and ambient noise. The closer to A, the better the isolation. At Work With Island, the Island Solo and Island Desk are classified A, while the Island Duo and Island Quattro are classified B.

What does - 31.1 dB mean?

The Island Desk offers a noise reduction of 31.1 dB. In practice, this means going from a loud environment (classroom, noisy open-plan office) at 70 dB to a quiet space at 40 dB (calm office, silent library).

Good to know

The Island Solo and Island Desk are certified Class A under ISO 23351-1. The Island Duo and Island Quattro are certified Class B under the same standard.

The benefits of good acoustics

  • Focus and productivity
Less noise, more concentration. Acoustic pods create real bubbles of serenity — perfect for focusing, taking a call, or working together without disturbing others.
  • Well-being at work
A quieter environment reduces stress and improves focus and communication.
  • Guaranteed privacy
Conversations stay private — whether it is a sensitive discussion or a team video call. At Work With Island, we aim for the right balance between calm, comfort, and common sense. Because the best pod is not the one that blocks out every sound, but the one that fits naturally into your workspace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the technical criteria of this standard?

The standard evaluates performance based on several lab-measured criteria.

The two main ones are:

  • Sound pressure level, which measures the amount of noise inside and outside the pod. It indicates how effectively the pod blocks sound transmission.
  • Sound reduction index, which shows the pod’s ability to reduce external noise and create a quiet interior environment.

Is the ISO 23351-1 standard mandatory?

No, this standard is not mandatory, but it has become the international reference for evaluating acoustic pods. It ensures that the performance announced by each manufacturer is based on the same testing protocol, which guarantees transparency and reliability. Make sure your supplier holds this certification and that the test was carried out under the right conditions.

What is the difference between 25 dB and 30 dB of reduction?

The decibel scale is logarithmic, meaning every 3 dB increase doubles the performance. So a pod with 30 dB reduction is twice as effective as one with 27 dB.

What is the acoustic insulation of our pods?

The Island Solo and Island Desk now reach Class A, with noise reductions of 30 dB and 31.1 dB.
The Island Duo and Island Quattro are Class B, with noise reductions of 28.6 dB to 29.80 dB.
